  1. Algardi, Alessandro c. 1595-1654.
  2. Italian Baroque sculptor, active in Rome and
  3. at the papal court. His major work, on which
  4. he was intermittently occupied from 1634 to
  5. 1652, is the tomb of Pope Leo XI (Medici), in
  6. St Peter's, Rome. Although Algardi's work is
  7. more restrained in expression than that of
  8. his contemporary and rival Bernini, it is
  9. Baroque in style, with figures often
  10. violently contorted and full of movement. His
  11. portrait busts include St Philip Neri 1640
  12. (Sta Maria Vallicella, Rome).
